Consistency is the key to good skin

How often do we say phrases like..

I'll start on Monday, the first of the month, New Year?

It is great to have a goal in mind whether it be fitness, eating healthier or looking after your skin but often we fall by the wayside because new habits are difficult to implement! But don't beat yourself up, we are all guilty of being all gung-ho at the beginning of some new aim but soon finding ourselves back to our old ways when other priorities sneak in.

I think that bringing things back to basics is one way to ensure consistency to a new life-change. No one ran a marathon the first day after starting a couch-to-5K and hey, no one can live on salads and water forever! For the purpose of looking after our skin, there is no real point in buying the dearest anti-wrinkle cream in the world to apply it to un-cleansed skin (true story!). What I'm saying is, let's start with the fundamental elements of skincare and smash them before trying all the products!

Good cleansing routine - get rid of make-up, dirt and pollution
SPF - protect your skin now
Moisturise - if you feel you need to

Don't get me wrong, I love the latest skincare products with their gorgeous packaging, smells and youthful promises as much as the next person, but finding out what your skin type is and what exactly you wish to achieve from your skincare is so important. Once you get the basics right, then is the time to introduce new products if you wish, bearing in mind it can take using a product a few weeks before a benefit is really noticed. Applying a serum for one night will not dramatically take away 10 years (if you hear of any that does, pm me!).

The other side is that if you are consistent with your skincare routine then the odd blip (forgetting or too tired to take your make-up off) will not make all your previous effort count for nothing. You can be happy in the knowledge that you are constantly nourishing your skin and you will continue as before the next day without starting from scratch!
