Brand focus: My picks from the Ordinary

The Ordinary story

In 2016, a skincare brand, like no other at the time, appeared in pharmacies looking like something that came straight from the chemistry lab. The range was minimal in style with monochrome packaging, each product looking just like the one next to it. There was no fancy product claims and promises, however, it was a breath of fresh air in an industry that very much comes with a marketing requirement to stand out.

The Ordinary 'The Bright Set'

The companies 'Everything is chemicals' standpoint was revolutionary as it coincided with the natural, organic movement of skincare. Science is the forefront of product development and their 'less is more' approach evident by their relatively compact ingredient lists.

With currently 57 individual skincare products in the range, The Ordinary lets you be the boss of your skincare. You can create your own specific routines with their stripped back, almost individualised ingredients. While some of the lesser experienced skincare consumers might find it daunting and confusing, their website is on hand to help, with accurate descriptions and routine builders to suit everyone's needs.

Another advantage (and an important one!) is the low price-point. The ingredients themselves are the stars of the show, revealing it is possible to make such products reasonably priced. Marketing faff and elaborate branding is often why skincare brands are more expensive than they need to be. This no-fuss route, although seemingly radical, has proved that simple products made well can be just what consumers need in this era of abundant skincare.

My view

So I think The Ordinary have been a game-changer in the skincare market offering a simplified, streamlined and scientific approach to satisfy those who like to feel in control of what goes on their skin. Here are my top picks (which I have bought, tried and used myself).

Squalane cleanser

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser
            The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser
This cleanser is suitable for all skin types. It begins as a cream and changes to a gorgeous, oily balm when massaged into the skin. It is then rinsed off with water. My skin doesn't feel stripped of moisture after using (which is a no-no for me in a cleanser). It is effective as a makeup remover too.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

I am a fan of glycolic acid in my skincare, although I only use it sparingly throughout the week. This product helps the texture of my skin and overall tone. Great value for a good sized bottle, that lasts me ages.

The Ordinary Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% solution

I've been experimenting with Vitamin C in my skincare recently and discovered this one from The Ordinary. I just use a few drops at night after cleansing. On application, I feel my skin heat up for a few seconds. It does take a while to absorb into my skin though so I wouldn't use it personally in the morning as I am not sure how my SPF and makeup would sit. Happy to use it at night though when I've more time and I don't always feel the need to apply moisturiser after.

Which 'The Ordinary' products do you use in your routine? I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments.
